The action is the juice

I never understood the toil of Man.
I could infer it, but the big Y eluded.

Until I read Ruskin: The highest reward for a Man's toil is not what he gets for it, but what he becomes by it.
Becomes by it? Tired, drained, hurt or wise, rich, satisfied? The values differ depending on the Getting or the Becoming.

The Chinese have a proverb (don't they always) stating that to toil is needed in order to become a Man.

Here's what I think: unless you're a monk, chances are that you'll end up with anything but your due. So whatever you do, just do it and gain satisfaction from doing it. Worry less about Y. Simple as that! To borrow a line from a favorite action movie: "the action is the juice".
